Discussion Pilocytic astrocytoma
- Low-grade, relatively well-defined astrocytomas that tend to occur in young patients (WHO grade I tumors)
- Only one-third of patients are older than 18 years of age and only 17 % are older than 30 years of age.
# Image findings
- Variable image findings; 1) large cystic component with a brightly enhancing mural nodule(67% with non-enhancing [21%] or enhancing cyst wall [46%]), 2) heterogeneous, mixed solid and multiple cysts and central necrosis (16%) and 3) completely solid (17%)
- Enhancement is almost invariably present (~95%).
- Up to 20% may demonstrate some calcification.
