Discussion Olfactory neuroblastoma
1) Introduction
-Also called esthesioneuroblastoma
-Rare malignant neuroectodermal tumor that arises from the superior nasal cavity
-Tumor of neural crest origin that probably arise from basal cells of the olfactory epithelium
2) Primary sellar neuroblastoma mimicking pituitary adenoma
-Extremely rare, origin remains unclear
-Tumors arise from the ganglion of Locy which grows between the olfactory fossa and the telencephalic vesicle
-Neuronal transformation from pituitary epithelium
-Dupuy et al. reviewed 9 patients with primary sellar neuroblastomas; primarily in women, mean age of 40 years, 98%, bilateral hemianopsia, 66%, hyperprolactinemia,
3) Imaging findings:
-A sellar mass with or without supra- or parasellar extension
-Variable signal intensities on T1- and T2 WI with inconsistent enhancement patterns
-Mimicking non-secretory pituitary adenoma, tuberculum sellae / diaphragma sellae meningioma facing a clinicopathological entity of “pituitary neuroblastoma.”
