| Discussion | Brainstem Abscess 1. Introduction - Incidence : about 0.5–6% of brain abscesses, m/c in pons - Symptom: headache, fever, diplopia, unilateral face or extremity numbness/weakness or ataxia - Lab findings: Serum inflammatory markers and CSF are frequently within normal range - Prognosis : high mortality rate 2. Image findings - Typical appearance of a brain abscess on a conventional MRI - Central T1 hypointensity/T2 hyperintensity with diffusion restriction - Rim enhancement with peripheral edema - Dual rim sign on SWI : a hyperintense line located inside the low intensity rim - DWI might be helpful to DDx from necrotic or hemorrhagic tumors |
