| Discussion | Schwannoma of the larynx 1. About 45% of all neurogenic tumors occur in the head and neck region, mostly located in the parapharyngeal space Schwannoma or neurofibroma within the larynx is very uncommon (0.1% to 1.5% of all benign laryngeal tumor) àUsually located in the supraglottic larynx, rarely in the glottis (80% in the aryepiglottic fold, 20% in vocal cords) à usually grow submucosally; with a few reports describing polypoid growth 2. The internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve is most likely the nerve of origin 3. slow growing : gradual hoarseness, globus sensation, dysphagia, dyspnea on exertion with inspiratory 4. Imaging Findings 1) CT - Well defined, hypodense submucosal mass without signs of infiltrative or destructive growth - heterogeneous contrast enhancement 2) MRI - low or isointense SI on T1 WI compared with adjacent musculature and hyperintensity on T2WI. - Avid gadolinium enhancement is common 3) The only curative treatment option is complete surgical excision. |
