Failure of descent of the thyroid → lingual thyroid gland at the base of the tongue m/c type of functioning ectopic thyroid tissue absence of the normal cervical thyroid in 70% clinical manifestations: incidental mass on the tongue base, dysphagia, dysphonia, dyspnea Hypothyroidism (hyperthyroidism is rare) -> mass to enlarge and become symptomatic Imaging findings: mass extending from the midline mucosal surface of the tongue base into the medial SLS. CT scans show the lesion as hyperdense with or without CE. higher SI than muscle on both T1, T2WI. 99mTc pertechnetate scan, I-123 scintigraphy |
